Glass Target Ball from the 1880's
Light Blue - this is the variant with reversed letters S and P.
When engraving one of the moulds, a worker forgot to fashion the letters in mirror writing, he did them the usual way round - resuting in all the balls from this mould having "typos"!!!
"N.B. Glass Works Perth - N.B. Glass Works Perth"
Reversed SS es and upside down P !!
Manufactured by: John Moncrieff Ltd
The company was set up in Perth by John Moncrieff (Senior) in 1865 as the North British Glassworks, South Street, Perth. During the 1880’s it was re-located to St Catherine’s Road. In 1905 it became a limited company: “John Moncrieff Ltd” owned by John Moncrieff’s son, John Moncrieff (Junior). The main output of Moncrieff’s was glass tubing, heat resistant glass for steam gauges, using a borosilicate glass with the trade names ‘Perth’ and ‘Unific’ - a forerunner of Pyrex. Other pieces, such as the shooting targets shown here, were made in different colours and filled with feathers.
